Is being told to pay a bill or fine with gift cards a scam?

Yes, always. No legitimate business, utility, or government agency accepts gift cards as payment. Anyone who insists you pay with gift cards is a scammer.

What it is

A caller or message claims you owe money — taxes, a utility bill, bail, a fee — and demands you buy gift cards and read the numbers on the back over the phone.

How to spot it

  1. You're told to pay with gift cards (Apple, Google Play, Amazon, etc.).

  2. You're asked to read the card numbers or PINs aloud or send photos.

  3. There's urgency and a threat — shutoff, arrest, or a lost prize.

  4. You're pushed to stay on the phone until it's done.

What to do

Hang up. Real bills are never settled with gift cards — verify any claim directly with the company or agency using a number you look up yourself.

When in doubt, slow down. A real credit union, business, or agency is fine with you hanging up and calling back on a number you look up yourself.
