Is a pop-up or call saying your computer is infected a scam?
Yes. A pop-up warning or phone call claiming your computer is infected and telling you to call a number or grant remote access is a tech-support scam — real companies don't reach out that way.
What it is
A scammer poses as Microsoft, Apple, or your internet provider through a scary pop-up or call, then talks you into giving remote access to your device or paying for fake "repairs."
How to spot it
A full-screen pop-up says your device is infected and to call a number.
The caller wants remote access to "fix" your computer.
You're asked to pay with gift cards, wire, or crypto.
They may ask you to log in to your bank while they "help."
What to do
Don't call the number or grant remote access. Close the pop-up (or restart your device), and if you paid or gave access, contact your credit union right away.
When in doubt, slow down. A real credit union, business, or agency is fine with you hanging up and calling back on a number you look up yourself.
